What are tooth-colored fillings?
When a tooth is filled with materials such as metal or silver amalgam, this results in dark areas of the tooth that noticeable when patients smile, laugh, and speak with others. Dr. Heather F. Fleschler instead recommends the use of tooth-colored fillings. These are fillings that provide the same benefits but are blended into the smile. The fillings are formulated with composite resin bonding which is made to match the natural tooth colors. Others won’t even know that patients had dental work done when they use tooth-colored dental fillings.
Advantages of tooth-colored fillings
Outside of the fact that tooth-colored fillings blend in seamlessly with the smile, they have other benefits when compared to silver amalgam alternatives. Studies continue to show that silver amalgam fillings may be harmful to the human body because of the release of mercury vapors. This means that composite resin bondings are safer and more biocompatible with the body when placed in areas of decay than traditional means. Alternatively, silver amalgam fillings expand and contract with temperature changes. This leaves room for bacteria to enter into the tooth, requiring further treatment later on such as root canal therapy to address. Composite resin bondings provide a tight and long-lasting seal in the area where decay was present to ensure the tooth stays healthy and free from infection. Tooth-colored fillings are also incredibly affordable for many of our patients and are the most beneficial choice available today!
