Who Is A Good Candidate For A Smile Makeover?

No one has a perfect natural smile; most patients could benefit from a smile makeover. There isn’t a threshold to qualify for a smile makeover with Dr. Fleschler. She doesn’t have a menu of items that are a part of every makeover. It depends on how you want your smile to look.

But potential candidates need to remember that smile makeovers are cosmetic treatments. To have these treatments, your basic oral health needs to be in good shape. Dr. Fleschler’s smile makeovers involve various cosmetic fixes to your smile. Serious oral health problems such as tooth decay, missing the majority or all of your teeth, and gum disease have to be dealt with before any smile makeover procedures can begin. Those problems don’t preclude you from having the various treatments of a smile makeover, but those issues would need to be cleared up first.

What Will My Smile Makeover Involve?

Dr. Fleschler always strives to create a new smile that achieves balance and harmony with the rest of your features. Depending on your facial appearance, skin tone, hair color, and condition of your teeth and gums, Dr. Fleschler may recommend one or more procedures to address your goals. These may include:

How Can I Prepare For A Smile Makeover?

You don’t need to do anything to prep for these procedures. They are easy to take, and you’ll love your new smile.

What Is The Process Of Getting A Smile Makeover? How Long Does It Take?

How we handle your smile makeover is dependent on your unique needs. Most of these procedures are immediate and may be combined into a single appointment. Porcelain veneers require a second appointment, as we have a dental lab fabricate the porcelain shells. If dental implants are a part of your makeover, they take up to six months or so from start to finish. If Dr. Fleschler includes Invisalign to straighten teeth or close gaps, using that system usually takes about one year. Otherwise, treatments such as dental bonding, teeth whitening, laser gum recontouring, and placing composite resin fillings all can be done in a single visit.

When you meet with Dr. Fleschler for your consultation to see if a smile makeover is right for you, she will have a better idea of your needs. At that point, we can give you a good idea of the timeframe involved to complete your new smile.

Smile Makeover Considerations

When customizing your smile makeover procedure, Dr. Fleschler will consider the following factors:

  • Alignment and spacing issues
  • Tooth length
  • Tooth shape
  • Tooth color
  • Uneven gum tissue
  • Missing teeth that need replacing

Are There Any Risks Involved With A Smile Makeover?

These treatments have little to no risk. With most any dental procedure, there is a slight chance of infection, but that’s rare. Again, remember that these are cosmetic treatments, not oral surgery. The only risk is if you decide to stick with your flawed smile rather than having Dr. Fleschler and our team give you a dazzling smile with our smile makeovers.

Do Smile Makeovers Hurt?

For the most part, these are painless procedures. Things like bonding, teeth whitening, and placing veneers don’t involve any pain. Replacing a filling with tooth-colored resin involves a small amount of drilling to prepare the tooth, but local anesthetic keeps you fully comfortable. Gum contouring is done with a diode laser, and it is remarkably comfortable.

How Long Will My Smile Makeover Last?

Dental implants can last for the remainder of the patient’s life. Gum contouring is permanent. Most of the other procedures have a lifespan. Porcelain veneers can last up to 20 years, while dental bonding usually lasts around a decade. Composite fillings can last 10-20 years. Teeth whitening? How long your teeth will stay white depends on how much you like coffee, red wine, and blueberries, and how diligent your home hygiene regimen is.

What Is The Best Strategy For Maintaining The Results Of My Smile Makeover?

The best way to maintain not only your new and improved smile, but your oral health in general, is to be diligent in your home hygiene. This means brushing twice daily for two full minutes using a soft toothbrush and ADA-approved fluoride toothpaste. Better yet, switch to one of the many newly ADA-approved electric toothbrushes. They do a better job, usually combining both circulating brush heads with ultrasonic energy, and most have a timer built in so you know when you’ve hit that two-minute mark. Some of these new brushes even have a sensor to tell you if you’re using too much pressure.

In addition to brushing, you need to floss once daily. This removes food particles and plaque between the teeth and under the edges of your gums.

You could give up red wine, raspberries, and coffee to maintain your whitened teeth, but that’s no fun! A better idea is to come back in for a quick Opalescence Boost in-office whitening treatment to get new stains off after a year or so.

The other important aspect of maintaining the appearance and health of your smile is to be diligent about keeping your twice-yearly professional cleanings and exams with Dr. Fleschler and our team. By coming in every six months, we can stay ahead of tartar that has been building up in your usual spots before it accumulates enough to begin to move under your gums. Also, we can spot issues such as decay when they are minor problems, fixing them with a small filling rather than seeing you in a couple years when that same tooth now needs a root canal to save it from extraction.
