What to expect from your dental checkup

Regular dental check-ups are an important part of good oral hygiene. Some patients avoid scheduling them because they feel that these visits are unnecessary. Instead, they only contact their dentist when problems arise. But did you  know that routine visits can ensure better oral health and wellness, and reduce the overall cost of dental care? This is because taking a proactive approach to dental care is far less expensive than a reactive approach! By visiting Dr. Heather F. Fleschler and her team every six months for a cleaning and evaluation, while caring properly for the smile at home, many patients can avoid gum disease and cavities. If problems are found during an evaluation, they are often in the earlier stages and are more affordable to address than if they are left ignored and untreated.

What can I expect during my dental checkups?

Routine dental visits are fast, simple appointments that often go flawlessly for many of our patients. In a relatively short period of time, we are able to evaluate a patient’s dental needs, educate them on how to care for their smile, and discuss possible treatments for the future. This includes cosmetic treatments that patients may be considering to enhance their smile, addressing imperfections or misalignment with appropriate solutions.

During a routine dental visits, patients can expect the following:

  • Patients first check in with our front office team, and complete any necessary paperwork before they are called back to the evaluation room. Patients should be sure to bring any information they need for their appointment, including their dental insurance information so benefits can be verified and costs applied accordingly.
  • A member of the clinical team will call you back, and then escort you to have dental x-rays done if needed. This is often done for patients who are new or who have not been to the dentist for an extended period of time.
  • The dental hygienist will then perform a thorough cleaning of the teeth to remove plaque, tartar, and calculus.
  • Dr. Heather F. Fleschler then evaluates the patient’s oral hygiene. If any treatments are recommended, such as fillings or periodontal therapies, these are discussed during this time. Our dental staff also takes this time to answer any questions the patient may have about their oral health.
