What is NuCalm?
Dr. Heather F. Fleschler describes NuCalm as a drug-free alternative to traditional sedation methods used in dental facilities. NuCalm is a way of relaxing a patient without the use of medications through oral sedation, nitrous oxide, or IV sedation. NuCalm works by combining four different methods of sedation by stimulating the body’s natural relaxation pathways. First, a chemical is administered to the patient as a nutritional supplement or a topical cream. This chemical is GABA, or gamma aminobutyric acid that relaxes the body in a natural way. In the brain, it helps shut down the body in preparation for sleeping. Once relaxed, patients undergo cranial electrotherapy stimulation, or CES, through a special device that opens the receptors to GABA while also allowing the body to naturally produce serotonin, a chemical used in sleep regulation. Patients wear headphones to listen to special music that provides different rhythmic signals in the left and right ears called binaural beats that can change brainwaves and reduce anxiety. In addition, patients can wear light-blocking glasses to establish full relaxation. By combining all of these methods of relaxation, patients can get through their dental visit with less fear and more comfort.
What if I still need medical sedation?
NuCalm can be used along other sedation methods as it is not a drug and instead a method of relaxing a patient without prescriptions. Patients can utilize NuCalm with other means of sedation including nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation without interactions.
